Ladies Matches 07/05/08  BH Pegasus Ladies in the Ladies Division of 6 beat leaders Viking 9/0 at Everest College to regain the title by 3 points.  Sue Lorrain/Lesley Acheson, Amanda Marsden/Anu Davies and Kim Street/Ali Hodgetts comprised the victorious team.  Despite a 5/4 defeat by Andover Sports Beechdown took third place in the table. Sandra McDonald/Pauline Prior scored a treble for Andover Sports supported by two rubbers from Liz Roberts/Sue Hartfield.  Leanne Frances/Andrea Hill won two of the Beechdown rubbers with Karen Southwell/Sandra Smith and Kate Appleton/Hayley Kopp contributing one each.  LoddonSherpas managed a 5/4 win over a two pair Andover Sports side early in March with sisters Stephanie and Cheryl Matthews winning the two necessary rubbers.  Each of the visiting pairs, Pauline Prior/Ellen Dennett and Liz Jones/Val Wheeler won two rubbers  Later the two Matthews sisters were again the sole victors when LoddonSherpas lost 6/3 to BH Pegasus for whom Lesley Acheson/Sue Lorrain, Kim Street/Sally Holmes and Jenny Skilton/Amanda Marsden won two rubbers each.

Mens Matches 07/05/08  A 9/0 defeat of Andover Sports B means that BH Pegasus A could, if they win their outstanding fixture, finish second to Viking A in the Mens Division 1 table.  Their victorious team was David Gough/Richard O’Kelly, Alex Wigmore/Kevin Harris and David Burrell/Martin Davey.

The current leaders of Division 2 BH Pegasus C could be passed by Beechdown A if they win their outstanding away fixture against Andover by a sufficient margin. Beechdown A had previously beaten Phoenix A 7/2 at Sherfield School with a maxima from both Mark Bayliss/Simon Johnson and Daniel Sheppard/James Bartlett supported by the seventh rubber from Tim Jefferies/Martin Webb.  Paul Verling/Matthew Savastano and Jon Thomson/Greg Sudell won a rubber each for the home side.   LoddonSherpas A recorded the same score when beating Waverley at the Sports Centre.  Ian Young/Phil Carley won their three rubbers for the home team with Phil Hood/Mitchell Hockley and Jamie Webb/Wayne Haist wining two each.  Adam Bridgen and Keith Miles won the two rubbers for Waverley.

Late news.  Andover were forced to concede the match to Beechdown A  due th non-availability of the hall at the last minute so Beechdown A take the Division 2 title.

Whitchurch finished their season in Division 3 with two defeats; firstly they lost 9/0 to Hurst at the Hurst and then, a week later, lost 7/2 at home to Phoenix B   In this latter match Mark Loader/Joe Clark and Sean Mallard/Peter Askew won a rubber each for Whitchurch.  Bob Cosgrove/Matthew Savastano and John Shipman/Roy Galle both scored maxima for Phoenix B with Mark Cleave/Mark Fuller getting the seventh.  In the earlier match the successful Hurst team was Keith Lawrence/Chris Puxley, Mark Payne/Duncan Kenny and Dave Keep/Colin Cresswell.

Mixed Matches 07/05/08   Two cards received from St Marys, in which the home were successful,  meant that the Mixed division 1 table could be completed.  In the first of the two matches they beat Division winners BH Pegasus A 6/3 and in the second they accounted for Andover Sports A 7/2.  Against BH Pegasus A Mark Ferguson/Margaret Mason and Peter Braithwaite/Janine Fisher won trebles with each of the visiting pairs, David Burrell/Anu Davies, Martin Hill/Amanda Marsden and Chris Pearson/Sue Lorrain obtaining one rubber.  Damien Roberts/Pauline Prior and Shaun McDonald/Liz Roberts won a rubber each for Andover Sports A in their 7/2 defeat. Mark Ferguson/Margaret Mason and Peter Braithwaite/Janine Fisher again  won their three rubbers for St Mays.  This time a seventh rubber came from Kevin Digwood/Andrea Farmer.

With Beechdown A clear winners of Division 2 the fight was on to get the second promotion spot.  The competition was between Beechdown B and Viking C who finished their season with a 6/3 defeat of Waverley A.  Vince Yong/Sara Haddow set up thgis win by taking all three of their rubbers supported by two from Ben Ansell/Ruth Cairns and one from Neil Hodges/Diane Cooper.  Adam Bridgen/Jan MacDonald won two of the loser’s rubbers with Keith Miles/Jo Berry getting the other. The other match in the division resulted in a 6/3 home win for BH Pegasus C over LoddonSherpas A.  Martin Davey/Lesley Acheson , Dale Turpin/Jean Deverill and Steve Glover/Haylie Fox won two rubbers each for BH Pegasus C  Ian Young/Cheryl Matthews won two of the loser’s rubbers with Phil Hood/Sue Evans getting the third. The Viking C/Waverley A result means that both Viking C and Beechdown B finished equal on 48 points. They were both level with 108 Games for, so the fight for the second promotion spot to Division 1 was, according to our rules, down to points for.  Beechdown B had scored 3641 points compared to 3613 for Viking C and so gain promotion along with their A team.

Division 3 was completed when a Andover Sports B side comprising Daniel Pharoh/Ellen Dennett, Peter/Sue Hartfield and Geriant Griffiths/Liz Jones beat Beechdown C 9/0.

Hampshire County 1stTeam 18/04/08  After the three matches over the final weekend the County 1st team finished in a comfortable 6th position.  5/5  draws against Leicestershire and then Worcestershire followed by a 7/3 defeat by Surrey meant the the team finished with 41 points.  Buckinghamshire with 29 points and Worcestershire with 38 were relegated.  The weekend was not without it's moments and it was not until the Sunday that the battle at mid and bottom table was sorted out.

Return to Sport 03/04/08  A ‘Return to Sport’ course, organised by the LoddonSherpas Club, will be held over a period of 6 weeks on Thursdays commencing on Thursday 22nd May.  Play will start at 7.40pm ending at 9.00pm.  The venue will be the Sports Centre.  The cost for the course is £15.

BDBL Secretary 28/02/08  Trevor has been League secretary since summer 1986- nearly 22 years and will stand down at the end of this season.  In that time  he has dealt with a multitude of tasks for the good of the League.

The number of tasks is too numerous for me to describe them all, but some of them are as follows:- he deals with all the paperwork between the League and club secretaries, District secretaries, Hampshire Badminton Association and Badminton England.  He arranges venues for coaching courses and tournaments, and oversees the applications, shuttles and running of the events.  All match cards are sent to him and he keeps detailed records of each match result, the players and their individual performance. He is one of the committee that plans the fixtures each year, types the chronological lists and then sends all details of the seasons matches to club secretaries, together with any information from the committee regarding the smooth running of the League. He plans the A.G.M. agenda, produces the paperwork and arranges the venue; then puts the new season’s composition to the meeting.

This web site was set up by his neighbour, John Johnstone, to whom we are greatly indebted. It is updated and maintained by Trevor, and the regular articles in the Gazette are written by him.

For the past 20 years, as Chairman of the League, I have worked with Trevor and have relied upon him for his great knowledge of local players and clubs as well as details of county and national badminton. He has been a most meticulous and conscientious secretary, who has carried out all the secretarial duties, plus many extras, with great cheerfulness and friendly humour.

We shall have great difficulty in replacing him, but replace him we must.  I know you will want to thank him for all his hard work.  A fitting response would be for another committed badminton player to take over in July this year.
