Mens Match Report 11/02/05     There were two Beechdown A matches reported this week in Division 1 of the Mens section.  In one their team comprising, Neil Marie/Peter Seward, Daniel Harvey/Daniel Sheppard and Tim Corke/Mick Cummings accounted for visiting Andover Sports A with a 9/0 scoreline in Division 1.  The other involved a 6/1 defeat of rivals Viking A in a time constrained match played at John Hunt School.  In this match Peter Seward/Neil Marie won a maximum supported by two rubbers from Tim Corke/Mick Cummings and one from Daniel Harvey/Daniel Sheppard.  Mike Fidge and James Bevis won the solitary Viking A rubber.  With 69 points and only one match to play Beechdown A are almost sure of the Division trophy.  To cause an upset Viking A would have to win their remaining three matches 9/0 and Beechdown A would have to be beaten at least 5/4 in their fixture.   In the same division  a two pair BH Pegasus A recorded a 6/3 victory over their B side which also had only two pairs.  Abdul Khan/Tony Ashworth and Martin Davey/David Burrell won two rubbers each for the winners.

Andover now have an 11 point lead over second placed BH Pegasus C in Division 4 after a 9/0 defeat of that team at Andover and with two matches to play will be difficult to overhaul.  The winning team consisted of Ivor Brojek/Alan Holden, Alan Dixon/Paul Fletcher and Geoff Lewis/Mark Jenkins

Mixed Match Report 11/02/05  In another time constrained match St Marys Mixed Division 3 leaders lost 4/3 to BH Pegasus C at the Sports Centre.  Steve Glover/Doreen Quilter won two rubbers for the home side as did Martin Davey/Jenny Skilton while Tony/Lyn Glinos won two for St Marys complimented by one from Philip Desbois/Jenny Holmes.

In Division 4,
Richard James/Jo Berry, Colin Huntley/Debbie Symes and Philip Quinn/Caroline Rodbourne were the Waverley A team which beat Beechdown D 9/0 to bypass Basing Cavaliers at the top of the table.  A two pair Cavaliers side had beaten Phoenix B 6/2 a few days earlier.  Andrew Dance/Sheila Weston and Stephen Gaunt/Judith Lillis made up their team, winning three rubbers each

Restricted Tournament  11/02/05  In this Tournament which was held at the Sports Centre on Sunday 6th February neither of the two backmarkers in the Ladies Doubles, Ling Tan/Anu Davies (-4,owe a hand) and sisters Cheryl/Stephanie Matthews (-3,owe a hand), managed to make it through to the final playoff. Both pairs had one bad result in their 8 matches which was sufficient to let Hayley Kopp/Ruth Seward (Scr) and Kim Newman/Lesley Acheson (Scr) top the section equal on 114 points from a possible 120.  In the play off the latter pair from the BH Pegasus club emerged victorious in a close 15/14 finish after Hayley/Ruth had had a match point at 14/11.

The Mens section consisted of 7 pairs and here both the fancied pairs, Peter Seward/Neil Marie (-7) and Tim Cooper/Jonathan Phillips (-7) came through to the play off.  Tim Corke and Daniel Harvey also on a handicap of -7 were a close third with 84 points, 3 behind Seward/Marie who, as last year had been beaten in the section by Cooper/Phillips.  In a repeat of last year’s final Seward/Marie came from 8/12 down to take the trophy for the second year in succession from the pair who had been unbeaten in their section games.

With an entry of 12 pairs the Mixed was divided into two sections. Each group winner playing the runner-up from the other group in a semi-final.  Ian Young / Stephanie Matthews (+3) won Group A with Martin Hill/Amanda Marsden (-2) the second pair.  David Burrell/Anu Davies (-2) won Group B with 75 points closely followed by Richard Whatley/Hayley Kopp (+1) on 74.  Ian and Stephanie accounted for Richard and Hayley 15/9 in one semi-final while Martin/Amanda beat David/Anu 15/13.  In the final the strong defence of Ian and Stephanie proved too much for Martin/Amanda and they ran out winners with a 15/9 scoreline.

At the conclusion of the Mixed doubles Ruth Cairns, League Chairman, presented the winners and runners-up with their trophies
